The logo top ain’t going anywhere

Nike, Adidas, Puma, Fila are amoungst the kings and queens of sportswear and have dominated the logo tees and sweats for god knows how many years. I have them, I am sure you have some and I think we can mutually agree that we won’t give them a rest anytime soon. What I have noticed is that our high street favourites wanted to join the party, and now that wish list of mine has more tees and sweats on it because I really needed a few more (**Sarcastic emoji inserted here). Think Vetements, Kenzo, Balmain, A.P.C, I could keep naming but I may get carpel tunnel.

Our awfully talented Australian and New Zealand designers have graced us with their take on logo basics and they do not disappoint.

My spin on wearing a logo sweat – pair it back with a feminine skirt.

Hanging out in room 14 of the Thoroughbred Motel which hasn’t been touched since 1977 deciding on whether to have an instant nescafe or call my mum on the oh-so-90’s phone.

#NZFW Day 1

NZFW Wrap up

Although I was only able to be there for 2 days, New Zealand fashion week, you didn’t disappoint. There is nothing more refreshing than discovering new designers with unique talent, and from the get-go, I did just that. Without having to write a novel, I just wanted to touch base on my favourite designers of the week. I am (virtually) giving a round of applause to Wynn Hamlyn, Eugenie, Penny Sage and Lucinda Grey for ‘wowing’ me.

Wynn Hamlyn – I have too many (great!) words to say about your collection, mixing a 70s colour palette with 90’s accessories, incorporating what could be my grandmas rug. Can I have the whole collection?

Eugenie – I came across this label a little while ago and was completely drawn. Designing unique denim pieces, an array of 90’s inspired pieces from mini skirts to metallic tops and many forms of textures from velvets to snake print. When a designer showcases warm colours, panelled denim and velvet, well we can safely say I am going to love it.

Penny Sage – Does this label know that I love the 70’s era, because they had my attention before I could set my cameras settings. Earthy tones, effortless and structural tailoring, boyfriend-style trenches and ethereal shapes, were the stand out trends. Oh, and the statement earrings.

Lucilla Grey – Miss Grey delighted us with a beautiful wearable collection of creamy colours, classic black, injection of artistic prints and warmer hues. After discussing the show with my buyer/influencer friends, we agreed that this collection was a stand out due to its wearability. Congratulations Lucilla!

Thank you for having me NZFW, I look forward to being able to spend more time over there next year.

Give denim a rest

I wear denim a lot, and I mean – A LOT. I think we all do, not only is it an easy option, it is also comfortable, flattering and just a reliable go-to. Now that it is changing season, I have started to replace the denim and show a little leg. Don’t worry a little fake tan had to be put on before these bad boys made an appearance. A Winter tan is not the best looking tan, a little bit of gradual tan has definitely been a good friend as of late.

By showing legs, I don’t mean it is time to whack out the hot shorts and sandals. Lets take it slow folks, a little step at a time. My recent purchase (oh – it is a good one!) is this Christopher Esber skirt. Elegant but a little sexy, it can be dressed up with a silk cami and heels, or dressed down with flats/sneakers and a tee. This time, I decided to casually wear a tee but wear knee high boots to dress it up a little. Oh, and to be sure I won’t get cold. It isn’t 30 degrees, just yet anyway.

This time if year is definitely my favourite, not too warm and not too cold. It is that time of year where you can mix and match all of your clothes for all seasons. Go have a play!

In a days work at the Thoroughbred Motel

When you have creative friends, you collaborate and bring your creative ideas to life. Makes sense right? I for one love to style but I am also an avid enthusist of all things old. One Saturday my friend Meghan and I got together in an old hotel room and took a few pics. Most of the time, things that aren’t planned, come out the best. Agreed?

The Thoroughbred Motel has been standing since 1977, with basically everything original still in tow. What I love about places like these? They have character. I often wonder, who has stayed here? What did they do in this room over the decades? The marks on the walls, rips in the carpet, the aged men who have made some of the back rooms their home – what is their story? There is mystery to these places and that is why I love them.

Shooting all things tonal in room 14 of the Thoroughbred Motel.

Sub your top for a dress….more spaghetti can be eaten that way

The title says it all. Sub your top for a dress, even over denim, more food can be eaten that way. You’re all agreeing, I can sense it from here. Fact: Layer denim/pants under dresses to get an effortless layering look. Now, don’t go and put flares underneath your frilly Summer dress, keep the dress simple and sleek. A silk slip like so is the way to go (in my book of  farrshion rules anyway).

When one of our ‘it’ girls (Hi Gigi!) collaborates with a legendary designer Tommy Hilfiger it turns your wardrobe or ‘wishlist’ into a navy, red and white frenzy. Not only have I shot a preview of my favourite pieces, I also saw the show (here in New York) on Friday evening. Even though I love the one off runway pieces that blow your mind with creativity and lust, the TOMMYxGIGI collection was refreshing, consisting of layered wearable pieces that were shoppable from the runway. Look not everyone can wear a 3/4 ruffle skirt with a split in a checkered print, so this collection was a smart and easy buy for that ever-growing staple collection of yours.

Here I shot my most-liked pieces from the collection in my favourite bar (The Paddington – Sydney). What is funny is that I shot these pieces in the two hours before I met my friends here for dinner and drinks (The chicken is to die for). Talk about key time management skills.

Come into my room: The High Line Hotel – New York

Where:

The High Line Hotel in Chelsea, New York City

Why:

New York Fashion Week

What:

The hotel is an old seminary built in 1895. The charming ol’ thing still has its original tiled and wooden floors, fireplaces and vintage furniture throughout. She is magical. Her restored interiors take you back to its traditional gothic past

Who:

My husband and I

Highlights:

  • Intelligentsia Coffee is downstairs. Finally, finally, finally! This is by far the best coffee I have had in NYC.
  • The rooms are beautifully furnished and are (very!) roomy. If you have stayed in NY before, you will know that it is hard to step out of bed and not trample over your suitcase or other furniture items. They usually resemble a shoe box…
  • The staff are very friendly, and with no corporate reception area, it feels very european and personable.
  •  The terrace bar and restaurant at the front was a-mazing for drinking those icy cold Rose’s and ‘people watching.’ I can guarantee you you will see some, how do I say it, intriguing? people walk by.
  • The peaceful courtyard at the back was were I would take my morning coffee and numerous tech gadgets to catch up on what I missed overnight. It was very calming.

Comments:

The antique furniture throughout was divine and couldn’t be more ‘me’ if they tried. From the Persian rugs, the pink leather chairs and original paintings in ornate brass frames, talk about a vintage, eclectic American dream.

Thank you to you to The High Line hotel and staff, I have nothing but the best things to say about my stay and cannot wait to be back.

Until next time!

What I wore to New York Fashion Week

Ok, so it was fashion week in New York. I probably don’t have to remind you of that. I’m sure you were bombarded with it on your feed and you’re right eye was twitching as the week went on. Well, I just thought I would post what I wore, just to annoy you a little more. Ok, I am not trying to annoy you, I just thought you would like to be informed of this (Insert overly excited emoji here!).

I didn’t plan my outfits, just threw together whatever I thought worked on the day. (Cough cough: I wore the TOME striped skirt when I ate bread for breakfast, and being the celiac I am, the ‘I look pregnant belly’ had to be covered. I didn’t want anyone getting the wrong idea. It did help that the skirt is pretty darn rad anyway!).

Currently, I just checked into a quaint boutique hotel in West Hollywood, drinking a red wine and listening to Frank Sinatra. My ideal scenario right there. I do miss The High Line Hotel in New York however (do not panic!) I will be back.

Roaming the desert

I recently got back from Palm Springs. All I can say is you are so darn hot, yet so darn beautiful!

Joshua Tree National Park is a must see. Be sure to only expect vast open plains, a-lot of Joshua Trees and cacti, and desert animals which seem non-existent however clearly hiding from you. Even though it doesn’t sound like much, it was one of the most beautiful and zen places I have visited.

On the way back, we made a detour. Why? Because the Kaufmann Desert House deserves a detour. This house was built in 1946 by one of my favourite architects, Richard Neutra.

Lastly, if you follow my instagram (@brooketestoni) you will know that I was staying in what could possibly be classified my dream place. Next post will be on that baby.

Until then.

Green upon green upon green upon green. #tonguetwister

And no, not the ‘green green’ as in, ‘I want to look like kermit the frog’ green. I am talking army green. It isn’t quite like the utility clothing that was produced after World War II but shall we say it is a modern take on utilitarian dressing? The dress: a modern take I am very much fond of. #thirddaywearingandiamnotlying

Layer gold in a timely manner

It is funny how you go from disliking a trend to having to wear it everyday (story of my life!). Remember a few seasons ago it was all about the finer details? It was about how thin you could get your necklace or how dainty the pendant was. Fine jewelry went off like a BANG. I am not going to lie, I still wear mine every now and then, but to be honest I have gone back to what I love the most, and that is statement gold accessories. To me, there is no such thing as too many layers on your wrist or neck.

Today, being in-between seasons, called for layering light and neutral colours. It is the palette that I love to pair back with gold tones. Layer your bracelets back with a sleek gold watch (Featured: Movado Edge). This modern timepiece blends perfectly in with my bracelets, it was like they were meant to be. Happy little family they are.

#blackmoveonover !!

As it starts to warm up in Sydney (well for the days it makes its mind up!) and cool down (on the other side of the world), it is time to rethink the ol’ quintessential ‘all-black’ Winter outfits and ‘all-colour’ Summer outfits. Play a little swapsies with other wearable staple colours like camel. I am going through a crazy ‘lets wear camel’ all the time faze, and todays outfit is a great example of it. Camel is a very versitile colour which pairs back with everything, can be worn any season and can even be included in all the monochromatic wardrobes out there. It is a great way to introduce another colour into your outfit, without introducing an actual ‘colour,’ if you know what I mean.

Today, was a mix of lighter Winter pieces, back with Summer pieces. Please note: I have had to start using a lil’ daily tan moisturiser because believe me, these legs aren’t as pretty when they are the colour of ‘see through!!’

I will be filming a video regarding ‘in-between’ dressing on Monday. Until then, this is me today. I got a few odd looks from some older women because of my furry slides. RiRi won’t be happy.

On The Front Line

I have to admit something – I had previously thought that nearing the age of thirty, was going to be the end of the world. (I know a–lot of you have thought it too!!). I am not that young 20 year old anymore (I am 28 next week!), however I have become wiser, stronger, more loving but most importantly more confident within myself. I have overheard women say that life begins at thirty and it is not until now that I actually think these women aren’t lying (Sorry for doubting!).

What has been the main reason I am more confident in myself? The fact that I pursued my dream. My dream being what I am doing right about now. I am so thrilled to be a part of the new Westfield Beauty Spring/Summer 16/17 campaign ‘The Front Line, ‘ which aims to capture the energy and confidence that comes from pursuing your dreams.

Ladies, aim for the stars. You will not get there, unless you try.

The two staples that will never leave my wardrobe

They say to never wear horizontal stripes if you want to look lean, thank god I didn’t today. The vertical stripes are hiding that block (yes, I said that correctly) of chocolate I just ate. Once you pop you can’t stop – just work harder at the gym the next day right?

There are days I don’t want one bit of clothing hugging my body, and today was definitely one of them. Tip alert: Wear a heel with an extra oversized outfit to lengthen you out.

Wearing vintage Calvin Kleins back with an oversized Tome striped top (two of my favourite wardrobe staples). I know what you are thinking. No bra? Yes – no bra. You could wear those sticky boobie things and hope they don’t fall off. Otherwise join me today in #free (ing) thenipple.

Can we give a little love to my new sunglasses, they make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Over and out.

If you haven’t already noticed. Terracotta is my friend. We met a few years ago, I brushed her from time to time, but now we are closer than ever. She is the colour anyone can wear. Blondes, brunettes, darker skin tones, lighter skin tones. It is also a colour that can be worn back with all other tones (well, in my eyes!). Sorry, this isn’t a good example of that. Today, there was a terracotta explosion and I enjoyed being in it. I even blended in my soon-to-be white terracotta tiles.

Invest in this colour folks. It is earthy, easily paired but most importantly will put that Spring/Summer smile on your face.
